WHEN FREEDOM BECOMES A TRAP (PART 2)
KEY TEXT: 1 Corinthians 6:12 (KJV): “All things are lawful unto me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful unto me, but I will not be brought under the power of any.”

LAWFUL BUT NOT BENEFICIAL: Spiritual maturity is revealed in the ability to discern between what is lawful and what is beneficial. Many believers assume that because something is permitted, it is safe to indulge in without consequence. However, Apostle Paul makes it clear that not everything lawful is expedient. Anything that does not strengthen the spirit, promote godliness, or advance one’s walk with God may gradually become a spiritual liability. When believers ignore this truth, freedom slowly transforms into a trap that weakens spiritual sensitivity. (Romans 8:6; Proverbs 14:12)
FROM PERMISSION TO CONTROL: What begins as a choice can gradually become a controller. Repeated indulgence in lawful but unprofitable things opens the door for subtle domination of the flesh. Apostle Paul boldly declared his refusal to be brought under the power of anything. This teaches us that freedom is lost the moment something begins to dictate our decisions, time, or devotion to God. When prayer, obedience, and fellowship are sacrificed on the altar of pleasure or convenience, freedom is turned into bondage. (Romans 6:16; Galatians 5:17)
SUBMITTING FREEDOM TO THE HOLY SPIRIT: God never intended freedom to operate independently of the Holy Spirit. True liberty flourishes under divine guidance, producing self-control, discernment, and godly restraint. When believers submit their freedoms to the leadership of the Spirit, they walk in victorious liberty that glorifies God and protects destiny. Spirit-governed freedom preserves spiritual strength and keeps believers from falling into traps that delay purpose and weaken effectiveness. (Galatians 5:16; 2 Corinthians 3:17)
PRAYER:
Father, I thank You for the freedom I have received through Christ Jesus. I ask for grace to discern between what is lawful and what is beneficial. Deliver me from every habit or indulgence that seeks to control my spiritual life. I submit my choices to the leadership of the Holy Spirit. I declare that my freedom will not become a trap, but a channel for righteousness and spiritual growth, in Jesus Christ’s mighty name. Amen.
REFLECTION:
Proverbs 25:28 (KJV): “He that hath no rule over his own spirit is like a city that is broken down, and without walls.”
