THE VIRTUE OF SELF-CONTROL
KEY TEXT: 1 PETER 5:8 KJV: “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour.”

INTRODUCTION TO SELF-CONTROL:
Self-control is a critical aspect of living a godly life, as it helps believers align their actions and thoughts with God’s will. It involves discipline, restraint, and the ability to say no to things that hinder spiritual growth. The Bible teaches us that self-control is not only a personal responsibility but also a fruit of the Spirit, gifted to those who walk with Christ. "He that hath no rule over his own spirit is like a city that is broken down, and without walls" (PROVERBS 25:28 KJV).
THE FOUNDATION OF SELF-CONTROL:
The foundation of self-control lies in submission to God. Without acknowledging His authority over our lives, our efforts to control ourselves will be in vain. True self-control begins with surrendering to His guidance and allowing the Holy Spirit to work in us. "I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me" (PHILIPPIANS 4:13 KJV).
RESISTING TEMPTATION:
Self-control enables us to resist temptation. Temptations are a part of life, but God provides us with the strength to overcome them when we rely on Him. Through self-discipline, we can choose obedience to God over temporary pleasures. "There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able" (1 CORINTHIANS 10:13 KJV).
