THE DANGERS OF GREED (PART 3)
KEY TEXT: LUKE 12:15 KJV: “And he said unto them, Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man's life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth.”

A greedy person is often blind to the needs of others, caring only for their own gain. This selfish attitude is contrary to the will of God, who calls us to love and care for one another. Greed and covetousness has blinded many believers’ eyes to the reason for Christ saving them from the world. The strive for the kingdom of God is no more in the mind of many believers but the love of temporary pleasure. "But whoso hath this world's good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him?" (1 JOHN 3:17)
Greed can also lead to oppression and injustice, as the rich exploit the poor for their own benefit. God hates such wickedness and will bring judgment upon those who oppress others for personal gain. It's very sad that even some people that call themselves Christians use their wealth and position to oppress the poor, some go as far as using the police to intimidate others. “He that oppresseth the poor reproacheth his Maker: but he that honoureth him hath mercy on the poor” (PROVERBS 14:31).
Instead of pursuing perishable wealth, believers are called to seek godliness and contentment, trusting in God's provision rather than in uncertain riches. Remember everyone was born into this world with nothing and will certainly go away from the world with nothing. "But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out” (1 TIMOTHY 6:6-7).
PRAYER:
Lord Jesus Christ, let the spirit of lust and idolatry not have dominion over me. Grant me the grace to overcome the temptation for greed and covetousness, in Jesus Christ’s mighty name. Amen.
REFLECTION:
HEBREWS 13:5 KJV: “Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.”
